The Mongolian people have enjoyed democracy since 1990. During this time, they have embraced their new found freedom with independent work and the ability to be more mobile, moving about the country and traveling abroad (the word traffic jam has recently become a part of the vocabulary of those living in the capitol city of Ulaanbaatar). In the city, western influence is apparent in dress and popular music. The traditional life style of the nomadic people (approximately 40% of the country's population) however, carries on not far outside of UB City.
